The Phalangite has emerged as a cornerstone of the current meta in Command An Army. Known for their extreme range and defensive capabilities, they can effectively hold capture points against almost any conventional rush. When positioned in a circle formation, they create a "turtle defense" that prevents most enemy units from even making physical contact before being defeated.
According to player experience, the strength of the Phalangite lies in its ability to hit multiple enemies in a single line. This makes them particularly deadly against clustered infantry. However, they are not invincible; their effectiveness drops significantly if they are forced out of their formation or if they face units capable of high-damage cleave attacks.
Optimal Phalangite Build and Synergy
To build a winning army around the Phalangite, you must focus on protecting them while they hold the line. Since Phalangites are stationary in their most effective defensive stance, they require support to deal with units that manage to bypass their spears.
- Synergy with Halberdiers: Pairing Phalangites with Halberdiers creates a formidable wall. The Halberdiers provide additional reach and defense, ensuring that any unit attempting to penetrate the circle is stopped before they can reach your Phalangites.
- Lancer Support: Lancers are essential for clearing enemy commanders and high-value targets that might otherwise harass your Phalangites. A well-timed Lancer rush can disrupt enemy formations, allowing your Phalangites to maintain their position.
- Formation Positioning: Always utilize the circle formation when defending a capture point. This minimizes the surface area exposed to enemy fire and ensures that your units can focus their damage on incoming attackers from all directions.
Countering the Phalangite
If you find yourself facing an enemy team spamming Phalangites, do not attempt a direct frontal charge with standard melee troops. Community reports indicate that this is essentially "suicide," as your units will be killed before they can even strike back.
The Best Counters
- Lestrigonian Giants: These are currently the most reliable counter to Phalangite formations. Because of their cleave attack, they can hit multiple Phalangites simultaneously and push through their defensive line without sustaining heavy casualties.
- Artillery/Long-range: Using mortars or other ranged siege units can break the formation from a distance. Once the formation is broken, your melee units can move in to finish off the remaining troops.
- Flanking: If you cannot break the front, look for opportunities to flank. Phalangites are most effective when they are stationary and facing the direction of the threat. Forcing them to turn or reposition often leaves them vulnerable.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
A common error among players is becoming complacent when defending a point. Even with a strong Phalangite defense, you should never leave your units unattended.

- Poor timing on Rushes: If you are using Lancers to break a Phalangite wall, ensure your rush ability is off cooldown. Timing your abilities to coincide with your team's push is the difference between a successful capture and a wasted spawn.
